Today, we will introduce the “monorail”, one of the means of transport for reaching city center from Haneda Airport, including how to board, how to transfer, and the various kinds of tickets.
How to Travel From Haneda Airport to the Center of Tokyo
There is a wealth of choices in how to get from Haneda Airport to central Tokyo with four major modes of transportation: the monorail, Keikyu Line, airport bus, and taxi.
The Tokyo Monorail Haneda Airport Line is a route along the Tokyo Monorail that connects Hamamatsucho Monorail Station with Haneda Airport Terminal 2 Station. The interior of the monorail car is different from an ordinary train bringing more excitement to your journey.
In addition, passengers who need to transit between international and domestic flights can get the monorail transfer tickets at the international and domestic counters at Haneda Airport, allowing those passengers to travel between Haneda Airport International Terminal and Domestic Terminals 1 and 2 free of charge. (Boarding pass and passport must be presented)

Getting From the Arrival Lobby to the Monorail
■How to get from Haneda Airport Terminal 1 to the monorail ticket gates
Passengers flying with Japan Airlines, Skymark, or some flights of StarFlyer will arrive at Haneda Airport Terminal 1.
The Haneda Airport Terminal 1 Monorail Station is directly connected to the spacious concourse on the first basement floor at Haneda Airport Terminal 1 and can be conveniently accessed from the airline departure lobby or arrival lobby.

The arrival lobby is located on the first floor, so take the escalator or elevator down to the first basement floor where the monorail ticket gates are. There are two ticket gates, the North Exit and the South Exit. Go even further down from the ticket gates on the first basement floor to the second basement floor to get to the platform.
■How to get from Haneda Airport Terminal 2 to the monorail ticket gates
Passengers flying with All Nippon Airways, Air Do, Solaseed Air, or some flights of StarFlyer will arrive at Haneda Airport Terminal 2.
The Haneda Airport Terminal 2 Monorail Station is directly connected to the to the first basement floor at Haneda Airport Terminal 2 and can be easily accessed from the airline departure lobby or arrival lobby. The platform has a flight information board that displays departing flight boarding gates and security check points.

The arrival lobby is located on the first floor, so take the escalator or elevator down to the first basement floor where the monorail ticket gates are. There are two ticket gates, the North Exit and the South Exit. Go even further down from the ticket gates on the first basement floor to the second basement floor to get to the platform.
Types of Tickets
■Ordinary Tickets
You will need to buy a ticket or an IC card to board the train. The monorail has two kinds of tickets, the “Monorail Ticket” and the “Transfer Ticket”.

When you are getting off at stations along the monorail, buy the Monorail Ticket. When you are changing to the JR line at Hamamatsucho Station or to the Rinkai Line at Tennozu Isle Station, buy the Transfer Ticket.
(For example, when going to Akihabara Station, purchase a Transfer Ticket for ¥650 and change the line to JR at Hamamatsucho Station)
Those transferring to the Toei Subway Line at Hamamatsucho Station will need to exit the ticket gates, so just buy a Monorail Ticket to Hamamatsucho.
■IC Transportation Cards (Suica, PASMO)
IC transportation cards save your time and energy to stand in line buying a ticket every time you get on a train. There are different types of IC cards you can by at Haneda, such as Monorail Suica ( Suica sold exclusively at monorail station), Suica ( ordinary Suica with Penguin designed) and PASMO.

1. The “Monorail Suica Card” that can be bought directly at monorail ticket vending machines:
A deposit of ¥500 is required when buying a card. When returning the card, the remaining balance minus a handling fee of ¥220 will be refunded.
These cards may be returned only at information offices in monorail stations (for example Hamamatsucho Station or Haneda Airport Station).

2. The “Suica Card” that can be bought at JR East stations:
This is the card with a illustration of a penguin designed on it, and requires a ¥500 deposit when purchasing. When returning the card, the remaining balance minus a handling fee of ¥220 will be refunded.
These cards can be returned at all JR East stations.

3. The “PASMO Card” that can be bought at ticket vending machines on the Keikyu Line:
A deposit of ¥500 is required when buying a card. There are no handling fees when returning the card, and it can be returned at private railway companies such as Tokyo Metro and Keikyu Corporation.

Getting to the Platform Once You’ve Bought Your Ticket or IC Card
The monorail platform is located below the ticket gates on the second basement floor of both Haneda Airport Terminals 1 and 2.

■Haneda Airport Terminal 1 Station

Monorail Types
・Haneda Express: Goes directly from Haneda Airport International Terminal to Hamamatsucho (no stops in between)
・Rapid: No stops from Haneda Airport International Terminal Station to Ryutsu Center Station (stops at every station from Ryutsu Center Station to Hamamatsucho Station)
・Local: Stops at every station

Those wishing to get to Hamamatsucho Station in the shortest time possible should board the train marked “First Arrival” on the righthand side of the monitor. (Even though the Haneda Express departs after the local train, it may arrive faster.)
Transferring at Hamamatsucho Station
After arriving at Hamamatsucho Station, take the escalator down to the first floor and you will see a transfer gate. The signboards leading to the transfer gate are easy to spot. Exit-only gates will be on the left, and transfer-only gates to the JR lines will be in front.
Those getting off at Hamamatsucho or those changing to the Toei Subway Line should take the exit on the left.
Tickets directly to Hamamatsucho will be collected once you pass through the ticket gate, so be sure to purchase your ticket at the boarding area of the Toei Subway station whenr transferring.

Transfer Tickets will return to you once you have passed through the ticket gate. You will need this ticket when disembarking at your destination, so don’t forget to take it.
Those transferring to the JR lines should go through the front ticket gate and keep going toward the right. Follow the signage on the floor and you will come to the JR platform.

Monorail & Yamanote Line Discount Tickets
Go from Haneda Airport International Terminal or Domestic Terminals 1 and 2 to any station along the Yamanote Line for just ¥500. The ticket price is ¥500 for adults and ¥250 for children.
These tickets are sold at ticket vending machines at Haneda Airport International Terminal and Domestic Terminals 1 and 2 only on Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, and other designated days. In addition, these tickets can also be purchased at monorail ticket vending machinesinstalled in 17 regionals airports.

Please note that this ticket may only be used once from Haneda Airport to a station along the Yamanote Line and can not be used in reverse to go from a station along the Yamanote Line to Haneda on the Tokyo Monorail.
Monorail Haneda Discount Round Trip Ticket
A round-trip ticket between Hamamatsucho Monorail Station and Haneda Airport International Terminal or Domestic Terminals 1 and 2.
The ticket price is ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children, and tickets are valid for ten days from purchase date or the start of travel date written on the front of the ticket.

These tickets cannot be purchased at Haneda Airport or Tokyo Monorail stations and can only be bought at ticket vending machines within the 17 regional airports or as a limited set edition purchased at a travel agency such as JTB, Nippon Travel, Kinki Nippon Tourist, JALPAK, an ANA Sales representative and other.
Tokyo Monorail One Day Walking Pass
The open one-day Tokyo Monorail passes can be used at automatic ticket gates.
The ticket price is ¥700 for adults and ¥350 for children, and can be purchased at all stations along the Tokyo Monorail. Sales and use of these tickets are limited to Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays. (No advance sales, issued on the day of use only)
While the validity is limited to the day it is purchased, this ticket is convenient when visiting multiple destinations along the Monorail.
Monorail & Odaiba Exciting Ticket
This discount ticket takes you from Tokyo Monorail Haneda Airport Stations to Rinkai Line Tokyo Teleport Station (Odaiba) via Tennozu Isle Station.
The ticket price is ¥500 for adults, ¥250 for children, and valid one way only. (The reverse route can be used as well)
Tickets are sold at Tokyo Monorail Haneda Airport International Terminal Station (2F), at manned ticket vendors in Haneda Airport Terminals 1 and 2, and at Rinkai Line Tokyo Teleport Station.

This ticket gets you a discount on admission, food, and drink at 16 facilities in Odaiba, so those heading to Odaiba via Haneda Airport will not want to miss out.
